The Black Dog

So, what is the Black Dog?

Depression is a silent beast that can sneak up and impact anyone, either directly or through loved ones or peers. It has been referred to as the "Black Dog" because it follows you wherever you go, sleeps on your bed, sits under the table during meetings and dinner. Sometimes it's hovering in the distance and other times it just jumps up and sits on your head! It is not easy to chase away and can lead to some pretty dark times. In my own case I have dealt with it personally and I know more than a dozen people that have or had depression. Family, friends and workmates.

The Black Dog is hard to understand sometimes. It can be even harder to talk about to others especially when we are all supposed to be "togeather", "motivated" or a "leader". In the past I have been told to "snap out of it" by others and been pretty hard on myself through a lack of understanding as to what the problem was. Most of all it affects not just the sufferer but all the people around them as well. I am lucky because I have managed, with much help, to tame the Black Dog and it's no longer a Great Dane, rather it is a little black Chihuahua!

Why have I shared such a personal story with you? I think it is something we don't talk about and are sometimes scared to acknowledge. I hope by me sharing my experience, you see it is OK to discuss it. If you or someone you know has a Black dog around, please don't ignore it.

Give the Black Dog a pat!
